Mass–Velocity Dispersion Relation in MaNGA Brightest Cluster Galaxies

نویسندگان

چکیده

We investigate a kinematic scaling relation between the baryonic mass and flat velocity dispersion, i.e. mass-velocity dispersion (MVDR), from brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) to galaxy clusters. In our studies, of BCGs is mainly estimated by photometry. The profiles are explored with integrated field unit (IFU) Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA). For first time, we reveal two significant results 54 MaNGA BCGs: (1) profiles; (2) tight empirical on BCG-cluster scale together samples, i.e., MVDR, $\log(M_\mathrm{bar}/M_\odot)=4.1^{+0.1}_{-0.1}\log(\sigma_{\mathrm{los}}/\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1})+1.6^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$, tiny lognormal intrinsic scatter $10^{+2}_{-1}\%$. This slope identical acceleration in clusters, which reminiscent spiral galaxies, albeit larger characteristic scale. residuals MVDR represent Gaussian distribution, displaying no correlations four properties: mass, length, surface density, redshift. Notably, provides strict test, disfavors general prediction three dark matter model.

Radial kinematics of brightest cluster galaxies

This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the investigation of a large sample of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), their kinematic and stellar population properties, and the relationships between those and the properties of the cluster. We have obtained high signal-to-noise ratio, long-slit spectra of these galaxies with Gemini and WHT with the primary purpose of investigating their s...

Ionized nebulae surrounding brightest cluster galaxies

We present integral field spectroscopic observations of six emission-line nebulae that surround the central galaxy of cool core clusters. Qualitatively similar nebulae are observed in cool core clusters even when the dynamics and possibly formation and excitation source are different. Evidence for a nearby secondary galaxy disturbing a nebula, as well as AGN and starburst driven outflows are pr...

The Origin of the Brightest Cluster Galaxies

Most clusters and groups of galaxies contain a giant elliptical galaxy in their centres which far outshines and outweighs normal ellipticals. The origin of these brightest cluster galaxies is intimately related to the collapse and formation of the cluster. Using a large cosmological N-body simulation of cluster collapse, we show how hierarchical merging naturally produces a giant, central ellip...

The stellar content of brightest cluster galaxies

We present near-infrared K-band spectroscopy of 21 elliptical or cD Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), for which we have measured the strength of the 2.293 µm CO stellar absorption feature. We find that the strength of this feature is remarkably uniform among these galaxies, with a smaller scatter in equivalent width than for the normal elliptical population in the field or clusters. The scatte...

The Globular Cluster Luminosity Functions of Brightest Cluster Galaxies

A new technique for studying globular cluster populations around relatively distant galaxies is developed and applied to a sample of 23 galaxies in 19 Abell clusters. The technique is based on the surface brightness fluctuations method of determining galaxy distances. The galaxies in this sample range in redshift from 5000 to 10,000 km s1, and were selected from the Lauer & Postman (1994) surve...
